There are two main groups, Chondrichthyes (cartilaginous) such as rays and sharks which do not fossilize well (however, their teeth are commonly found) and Actinopterygii (bony fish) which do fossilize well. Both groups date back to the Palaeozoic period - 544 to 245 million years ago.
