Starfish Fossil
Starfish fossil are echinoderms and date back to the Ordovician – 450 million years ago. Fossils starfish are rare as they tend to disintegrate and hardly leave a trace apart from ossicles (calcium carbonate plates) and spines after death as they are soft bodied. Most starfish have five arms and a mouth, however, there are some species that have multiple arms. Asteriacites, is the name given to the fossil imprint (trace fossil) that occurs when a starfish has settled on the sea-bed. We have found fossil starfish from North Yorkshire, Humberside and Dorset.
